While searching for the latest news related to caffeine and energy drinks, I came across an interesting tool. Energyfiend.com offers a quick test that tells you how many of your choice of caffeinated drink you can have before dying.
I used the tool, titled Death by Caffeine, and chose Cocaine Energy Drink, due to the recent controversy surrounding the beverage. I found that it would take 27 cans to do me in. Then I noticed that right beneath the results was a link that led me to where I could purchase the drink. Yes! That's exactly what I want to do!
After choosing Cocaine Energy Drink, I selected Spike Shooter. I've never heard of the drink, but something attracted me to it. The results read "Unfortunately, the makers of Spike Shooter refuse to disclose caffeine levels." Interesting.
Go ahead, pick your poison.

That's pretty suspicious that they won't disclose their caffeine levels. Shouldn't the FDA do something about that? It’s pretty sick how a Web site will effectively tell you that something is bad for you, but it will advertise something that it just told you could kill you. I guess that’s what it takes to keep the site up and running. I clicked on your link and saw that the Web site proposes a guess of between 100-200mg of caffeine for the SPIKE Shooter drink. That sounds pretty high.
I checked out how much of a certain Starbucks beverage it would take to kill me, and I found out it would be less than 50 cups. What is worse is that I usually order my coffee with an extra shot of espresso because I’ve developed a high tolerance to caffeine. I was especially alarmed by this Web site’s material because I worked at Starbucks for about three years. In that time, I served enough caffeine to kill several people. Does that make me a criminal?
I cannot believe that a site like this exists. I was shocked to see that the site will notify you about the dangerous amounts of caffeine in numerous products and then try to sell you them. Is this even moral? The scary part is that I don’t think that people truly know the risks of caffeine, because it is an over-the-counter product. I hope that people will realize the risks of caffeine before it’s too late.
My main concern is that UF is promoting the use of caffeine. There are coffee shops in the library and in numerous locations on campus. Students, especially in college, rely on the use of caffeine to study and receive good grades. I think that something should be done to warn students of the dangers of caffeine and give them other alternatives. I hope that many of these caffeinated drinks will be taken off the market by the FDA before deaths occur.
